The Independent Reader
This text is designed to bridge the gap between the advanced level and total self-sufficiency in reading serious expository prose. This book introduces some basic techniques in reading without prepared aids in the form of fifty-two articles distributed into twelve topics. Exercises and questions for class discussion are provided for advancing the student’s active communication skills while improving reading proficiency. If you have studied some years of Chinese and have used at least one advanced Chinese reader consisting of authentic articles with vocabulary annotations but still find reading newspaper and magazine articles or academic writings daunting, this book may be the next step for you.
