#12021-22 Academic Year Program 2021-22 學年班

  • The academic year program is a non-degree, non-credit program that provides intensive and effective Chinese language training to learners throughout the world. The program consists of three 10- or 11-week quarters and an optional summer term of nine weeks. Classes are held daily at the same time slots from Monday to Friday. One class is 50 minutes.

In response to the COVID-19 outbreak and resulting travel restrictions worldwide, ICLP is offering an online track for students who may have difficulties traveling to Taiwan for the 2021-2022 Academic Year Program. The online program will also serve as a contingency in the event that the Taiwan government and/or the National Taiwan University do not give permission for classes to be conducted in-person at the time of course scheduling.

Admitted students may choose to enroll in either the Physical Track or Online Track, and must inform ICLP of their decision by the track selection due date.

    COURSE MODULE AND TUITION
    Track options AYP
    • The course module of either track is convertible to 2 one-on-one classes if ICLP is unable to find a class that suits a student's exact level, learning pace, or otherwise deemed necessary by the Instructional Office to facilitate the student's learning.
    • The tuition covers textbooks/materials required for students' classes as well as textbook shipping fees for Online Track students, except for Independent Studies courses for High-Advanced level students.

    PHYSICAL TRACK
The normal visa procedures for Mandarin language students are currently inapplicable due to the pandemic. Unless they qualify for other types of special entry permits, ICLP will update all admitted students if special entry permits for studying Chinese become available for application. The latest special entry measures for foreign travelers to Taiwan can be found on the website of Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs: https://www.boca.gov.tw/cp-220-5081-c06dc-2.html

Physical Track students should plan their arrival date according to the quarantine requirements announced by the Taiwan government. Newly arrived students are not permitted to enter NTU campus until they have completed their 7-day self-health management after home quarantine. Students entering on visas for studying Chinese must schedule their arrival on a date designated by ICLP, and must comply with all visa, entry, and quarantine requirements as specified by ICLP in accordance with regulations, policy, and measures announced by the Taiwan government and NTU.

If unable to obtain entry permits in time, students may choose to enroll in the Online Track instead or withdraw from the program before the track selection due date. If the Taiwan government and/or the National Taiwan University do not give permission for classes to be conducted at the time of course scheduling, Physical Track students will be automatically enrolled in the Online Track unless they withdraw from the program before the track selection due date.

Physical Track students can expect to have an individual class as well as 3 group classes of three to four students each day. Classes may be scheduled at any time slots between 08:10 a.m. and 17:00 Taiwan time. To maintain the total immersion environment at ICLP, students are required to sign a Chinese language pledge and to speak exclusively in Chinese at all times, both in the classroom and within the ICLP area.

    ONLINE TRACK
The Online Track curriculum consists of 2 group classes of two to three students as well as one individual class each day. The decreased class size prevents potential technical issues from disrupting a group class, while the entire class time is concentrated undividedly on one student's learning in an individual class.

Online Track students are asked to provide at least 8 time slots between 06:10 a.m. and 24:00 Taiwan time (UTC +8) in which they will be available for classes. A student's classes may be scheduled at any of the time slots they provided.

Should travel restrictions and/or COVID prevention measures relax later on, Online Track students who are able to come on campus may choose to enroll in the Physical Track for their next quarter. Due to the complexity of course scheduling logistics, the class module and schedule of all students will remain the same until the end of the quarter regardless of any relocations. The same applies to Physical Track students automatically enrolled in the Online Track when in-person teaching is prohibited by the authorities.

    PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
(applies to both the Physical Track and Online Track)

Classes at ICLP emphasize oral practice, so students must spend adequate time (no less than 1.5 hours daily for each class they take) preparing and reviewing each lesson. While speaking is a core component of the ICLP curriculum, all classes provide comprehensive training in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Coursework may include reading materials, recorded audio materials, written assignments, and speeches. Textbooks are written in Chinese characters; some are rendered in simplified Chinese to suit students' needs.

Prior to enrolling at ICLP, students are recommended to have at least two years of language training in Chinese or the equivalence thereof at an intensive program (with overall Chinese language ability at or above the Intermediate-Mid level, TOCFL B1, CEFR B1, or HSK3).

Beginner students are welcome to apply for our Academic Year Program starting from the Fall Quarter. Those who wish to start from any other quarter are accepted once there are enough applicants to form a beginner's class. We recommend that beginner students join the Physical Track to ensure they establish a solid foundation for their Chinese abilities in an efficient manner.

Students in the academic year program are encouraged to attend three consecutive quarters, although ICLP also accepts applications for one or two quarters. From their second semester onward, students may tailor their coursework to their own interests. Splitting the year into three quarters provides students with the maximum opportunity to explore our diverse course options.

If students need to withdraw from the Program, the following refund guidelines must be observed:
    1. Students who submit a refund application prior to the first day of class are entitled to a 90% refund of the tuition.
    2. Students who submit a refund application before the end of the first third of classes are entitled to a refund of 50% of the tuition.
    3. There will be no refund after the first third of the classes.
    4. If courses of an entire quarter are cancelled due to low enrollment or other reasons unrelated to the student, a full refund will be issued without interest.
    5. The cost of any textbook, course material, and associated shipping fees incurred before a refund is requested shall be borne by the student and deducted from the refundable amount.
    6. No refund will be issued for the application fee.
    7. Refund applications shall be submitted by 17:00 of the due date by completing both of the following steps:
      1. Provide your bank account information online (contact ICLP by email for the link);
      2. Fill out the application form at the ICLP Office in person.
The refund is expected to be transferred approximately 4-6 weeks after the refund application is confirmed complete by ICLP. The student shall be responsible for all associated bank charges.
    8. Students who are unable to attend the program may apply for a deferment of enrollment prior to the track selection deadline. The enrollment deposit and/or full tuition will be held for one year. A re-application must be submitted by the application deadline of the quarter enrollment is to be deferred to. No application for deferment will be accepted after the track selection due date.
    9. Enrollment can only be deferred once. A processing fee and any difference in tuition will be charged in the event that the tuition is raised. However, no refund of tuition difference will be issued if the tuition is reduced. No refund application will be accepted once deferment is granted whether or not the applicant is able to enroll.
    10. Fees for optional courses, field trips, housing and insurance are non-refundable.
    11. The refund policy is in compliance with the Regulations for Implementation of Continuing Education at Higher Education Institutions (專科以上學校推廣教育實施辦法修正條文; 100.1.11教育部令) enacted by the R.O.C Ministry of Education.
